2 Week China Itinerary

Traveler standing in a traditional courtyard in a Dong village in Guizhou, China. This 2 week China itinerary includes unique cultural destinations like this.

China is a massive country that can be intimidating for first-time travelers to navigate.

If you’re on TikTok or Instagram at all, you’ve undoubtedly come across trending videos of futuristic Chongqing, the imperial (and political) capital of Beijing, and the always-trendy Shanghai.

While those urban hubs have their own distinct energy, at the end of the day, a city's just a city.

Don't get me wrong... I’m usually a huge proponent of visiting the big cities the first time around, but so much of China's actual charm and culture is tucked away in its rural villages.

So here's an alternative two-week itinerary that was custom-built for nature and culture lovers.

This off-the-beaten-path was curated by Eastogo Travel and takes you through some of the most iconic landscapes in Southern China including the karst mountains of Guilin, the otherworldly pillars of Zhangjiajie, and the diverse cultural communities of the Miao, Zhuang, and Dong people.

China Trip Checklist

  • Visas: before you book anything, check in on your visa situation! US travelers need a visa and UK/EU travelers can enter visa-free for 30 days.

  • E-Sims: skip the VPN headache and bypass the great wall with an e-sim that reroutes through Hong Kong or western servers. I used Nomad the whole time and had great coverage.

  • Experiences/Hotels/Trains: Trip.com has the best coverage on all things related to travel in China! Seriously, you can find anything from high speed rail tickets to 24-hour spa passes in Shanghai.

  • Apps: make sure to download Alipay, Wechat, and Didi China (ride-hailing app) before your trip.

  • Insurance: a trip to China is a big commitment and you never know what might happen so make sure to get comprehensive insurance for health and travel just in case...

2-Week China Itinerary Overview

This trip will take you through the souther provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, and Hunan. Here's the full breakdown:

Independent Travel vs Group Travel

I want to start by giving a disclaimer that this itinerary was only possible because I booked a group trip with a tour company.

They arranged for private transfers between provinces and saved us a ton of time and hassle.

For example, some destinations on this itinerary are hours apart and hard to get to by public transportation (trains or buses) so if you're coordinating an independent trip entirely, you might want to budget extra time or consider booking regional tours to cover specific attractions.

Although I typically plan my own trips, I was personally just overwhelmed this time around and opted for a group trip instead. Full itineraries can be arranged by Eastogo, or check Trip.com for activity-specific day tours.

The Sun and Moon Pagodas in Guilin, China. This 2 week China itinerary includes iconic landmarks like Guilin.

Day 1: Guilin

Begin your trip in the city of Guilin, where the incredible karst landscapes have literally been the subject of traditional Chinese Shan Shui paintings for thousands of years (dating all the way back to the Tang dynasty).

It's a smaller city so you'll likely have to transfer through Beijing or Shanghai but once you arrive, you'll find a vibrant city that perfectly blends nature and modernity.

Things to do in Guilin:

  • Climb Elephant Trunk Hill: start your day off with a quick 15-20 minute hike up one of Guilin's most famous attractions.

  • Visit the Reed Flute Cave: it's a vast underground karst cavern with massive stalactites and stalagmites just minutes from the main city area.

  • Stroll around the Two Rivers and Four Lakes Scenic Area: if you've seen photos of Guilin, it's definitely of this lake! The Sun and Moon Pagodas light up beautifully at night.

  • Eat Guilin Rice Noodles: thin rice noodles served dry with a savory broth, thin slices of beef or pork, pickled long beans, roasted peanuts, and fresh cilantro

Traveler overlooking the karst mountains in Yangdi Xingping Ancient Town. This 2 week China itinerary includes the stunning landscapes of Guilin.

Day 2: Yangdi River Cruise to Xingping Ancient Town

Our second day takes us deeper into Guilin.

Yangdi Village is a small village on the west bank of the Li River and the starting point for bamboo rafting! You'll hop on a raft and float down the river to Xingping Ancient Town.

Xingping is a historic town dating back over 1,300 years. It feels a little commercial now (kind of how Sapa in Vietnam felt) and it's clear that the residents are still trying to find a balance between modern tourism and authentic preservation of their town's history, but it was still nice to spend the afternoon wandering the alleys and admiring the architecture.

Things to do in Yangdi/Xingping Ancient Town:

  • Take a Bamboo Raft Down The Li River: drift though the most scenic stretch of the Li River!

  • Spot the "20 Yuan Bill" Viewpoint: fun-fact, there's a spot near Xingping where the dramatic Li river bend matches the exact image printed on the back of China's 20 RMB note!

  • Wander Xingping Old Street: wander the narrow, cobblestone alleyways of the ancient town. It's quite small but fun to explore!

Day 3: Yangshuo

I love when travel has an immersive element, so on the third day, you’ll explore Guangxi’s karst mountains from a different perspective.

We begin the day at Xianggong Mountain, where you’ll take a quick 15-minute sunrise hike up to the peak for panoramic views of the Li River and then continue your exploration down below with a guided cave tour.

End the day with a beginner’s Via Ferrata route scaling the cliff faces themselves and watching the sunset with a refreshing and well-deserved beverage in hand.

Things to do in Yangshuo:

  • Catch the Sunrise at Xianggong Mountain: climb up 200 stone steps for incredible sunrise views of the Li River among misty limestone mountains.

  • Go Spelunking in a Karst Cave: explore Yangshuo's cave systems from within! Some popular options include Fish Bone Cave, Huanglong Cave, or Swallow Cave.

  • Conquer your fear of heights on the Via Ferrata: clip in to an "iron path" and scale Yangshuo's limestone cliffs for a heart-pounding view of the valley below.

View of the Longji Rice Terraces in Guangxi, China. This 2 week China itinerary features China's most beautiful rice terraces.

Day 4: Yulong River, Huangluo Long Hair Village, & Longji Rice Terraces

Transitioning away from Guangxi's incredible landscapes, day four takes a pivot towards the province's ethnic minority villages.

We'll float down the Yulong River on a manual bamboo raft, meet the Red Yao women of the Guinness World Record-holding "Long Hair Village," and end the day with mesmerizing sunset views over the Longji Rice Terraces.

Things to do in Guangxi:

  • Ride a traditional Bamboo Raft down the Yulong River: glide along the Yulong River the way local fishing communities have for generations.

  • Meet the Red Yao Women at Huangluo Village: learn more about their cultural practices and beauty routines!

  • Watch the Sunset over Longji Rice Terraces: stay at a local Zhuang homestay and catch the sunset over an incredible 650-year-old network of terraced fields that wrap around the mountains.

After a morning of exploring Dong culture, we'll pivot towards Han culture with a visit to Longli Ancient Town.

This ancient city was once a Ming Dynasty military outpost and its fortified alleys hold 600 years of history, distinctly blending Han majority and local minority architecture and customs.

Itinerary Details:

  • Listen to the Dong Grand Choirs in Huanggang: maximize your chances of hearing a performance, by planning your trip around festivals or the new year. These choirs happen organically as part of village life, so it's better to assume that you won't necessarily get to experience it. The village itself is still beautiful to wander through!

  • Wander Longli Ancient Town: it's quite a small town but I really loved the everyday village scenes. If you're lucky, you might also be able to learn Dragon Dance from the official heritage holder!

The Heaven's Gate arch at Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie. This 2 week China itinerary includes China's most iconic mountain scenery.

Day 12: Tianmen Mountain

This is our first day in Zhangjiajie!

The city is huge with so many spread out attractions, so we really had to be strategic about how the itinerary was organized.

Located on the outskirts of Zhangjiajie, Tianmen Mountain ("Heaven’s Gate") is revered as the spiritual soul of the region. Originally called Songliang Mountain, it received its iconic name in 263 CE when a colossal cliffside collapse opened a massive natural rock arch through the summit.

Today, this sacred landmark unites centuries of dynastic and spiritual history updated with modern engineering, housing some of the world's steepest cliffside roads and skywalks against a towering, dramatic backdrop.

Itinerary Details:

  • Climb the 999 Steps to Heaven’s Gate and snap a photo at the iconic hole: no other explanation needed. Gotta leave some memories, ya know?

  • Ride the World’s Longest Cable Car: ascend from the city center straight up to the mountain peak on an epic, 30-minute cable car ride over jagged ridges.

Sandstone pillars in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. This 2 week China itinerary showcases China's most spectacular landscapes.

The park that inspired the "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie Avatar and one of China's most famous landscapes.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park features thousands of towering quartzite sandstone pillars rising out of deep, misty canyons. Spend your day exploring but plan wisely, because it's huge and quite easy to get lost!

Traveler overlooking the mountains before paragliding in Zhangjiajie. This 2 week China itinerary includes unforgettable outdoor adventures.

Day 14: Departure Day & Paragliding

Our tour with Eastogo technically ended on Day 13 but because our flight was late in the evening, we decided to squeeze in one more morning of adventure.

And what better way than to view the dramatic topography from above?

My partner and I decided to try paragliding for the first time and it was a surprisingly relaxing way to end the two week journey.

Itinerary Details:

  • Try traditional ear cleaning: okay... we thought they were going to use an ear candle but it ended up being a much more manual process. Not sure if I'd fully recommend it again but it was definitely an experience.

  • Paragliding in Zhangjiajie: explore the city from above with a beginner's experience of paragliding!

  • Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge + Grand Canyon: alternatively, some group members spent the day exploring the glass bridge, hiking the grand canyon, or trying via ferrata at Zhangjiajie!

China is so much more than its mega cities and cyberpunk skylines.

It's a country with incredible diversity, unbelievable landscapes, and genuinely kind people.

I'm glad that I got to experience an alternative two weeks through the south of China and it was a powerful reminder of all the little things that can be gathered in quiet moments and small villages.

If you're looking for a two-week trip that combines raw natural beauty with deep cultural immersion, then this southern route is as good as it gets!
